Aim of the Course:

 

This course will provide learners with the skills and knowledge to support children, young people, and other family members who are affected by someone else’s substance misuse/addiction.  

 

Course Learning Outcomes: 

  • A systems approach to understanding substance misuse 
  • How substance misuse impacts on family structure, such as roles, rules, communication and relationships 
  • The parent-child relationship and children’s attachment behaviour 
  • The impact of parental/adult substance misuse on child development and the extended family 
  • How youth substance misuse impacts parents and siblings, and how families respond 
  • Risk and protective factors for young people 
  • Identifying problematic substance misuse in young people 
  • Engaging and supporting children and young people affected by substance misuse 
  • Interventions used to treat young people and families 
  • Role of universal and specialist services for young people and families
